Head Instructor – Alan Kerr
Alan is currently VP of hockey with both the Okanagan Hockey School and the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
As a Player
Alan played WHL in Seattle where he was drafted in the 4th round by the New York Islanders. Alan went on to play 9 years in the NHL with the Islanders, Redwings and Winnipeg Jets. Alan’s best NHL season consisted of 24 goals, 34 assists, 58 points, 198 penalty minutes and was plus 30. His NHL highlight was playing in his first NHL game where on his second shift he scored a goal.
As a Coach
Since retiring from playing hockey Alan has been a head and assistant coach with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL and a general manager-head coach of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL. Currently Alan oversees all hockey operations within the Okanagan Hockey Academy and is the head coach of our major midget hockey team.
Philosophy
Hockey has become more than ever a game of speed and skill that requires specialized training both on and off the ice. I have assembled drills on the ice from coaches from several different countries to allow for maximum development in all areas. Summer is an opportunity to develop ahead of other players that will be competing for the same teams and positions. As a player the objective is to be a better player in the fall than when finished in the spring. My goal is to give every player that attends the best opportunity to take their game to a new level.
The Junior Prep Program
The program is designed for elite players that are serious about taking their game to a higher level. The camp encompasses power skating, on-ice individual skill development, games situation drills including position specific, scrimmages, off-ice shooting and puck skill development, off-ice strength and conditioning, and hot yoga. It is an all inclusive program that is designed to give each player the opportunity to reach their goals for the upcoming 2010/11 season. Numerous players have had substantial gains by attending the camp. Two examples are Mark MacMillan and Luke Walker, who were drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche respectively at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
The program is designed to progress throughout the summer in weekly segments that will allow players to be at their optimum level at training camp. Players will have the option to attend anywhere from 1 week to all 8 weeks. I would recommend a minimum of 2 weeks.
