The Okanagan Hockey School announced today that decorated Canadian National Women’s team member Colleen Sostorics will lead the 2010 Female Defense Camp in Penticton, BC.
Born in Kennedy, Saskatchewan, Sostorics has played extensively for the Canadian National Women’s team at the International level, winning three Olympic gold medals (2002 in Turin, 2006 in Salt Lake City, and 2010 in Vancouver). At the Women's World Championships, Sostorics has helped Canada to three gold and three silver medals, and at the 4 Nations Cup, she has captured five gold medals and one silver medal. Sostorics also competes at the club level for the Calgary Oval X-Treme of the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL).
“I believe this is a unique opportunity for players to learn and improve at a position-specific camp,” said Sostorics. “Players will have the chance to focus on defense-specific techniques that will benefit them in the upcoming season and beyond.”
Rebecca Russell, Head Coach of the women’s programs for the Okanagan Hockey School and Academy, says that Sostorics’ experience makes her the ideal choice to lead the new female defense camp.
“Colleen’s wealth of knowledge and experience she’s earned over the past 10 years will really benefit the girls that are attending this camp,” said Russell. “They will experience something special by having someone of Colleen’s calibre on the ice. With this being a defensive camp and Colleen playing defense with the National team for so long, she was the obvious choice.”
The new female defense camp runs from Aug 1-7 in Penticton, BC and is for 13-17 year-olds. The program’s mission is to provide female defensive players with an all-around exposure to the tools necessary to advance their hockey career through cutting edge teaching techniques and a professional understanding of the position.
